Some 16 years ago in 2001 Raju met a young 18 year old Shibu who was mentally challenged with cerebral palsy and epilepsy wandering in the streets who was abandoned by his family. Raju felt in his heart a compelling desire to help this man and took him home and fed him and cared for him. For the next 9 years he cared for him and rented a place to accommodate more mentally challenged and destitute people from all over the state and even from outside Kerala. The love of Christ came over him at this point in his life and since then Raju has made it his lifelong mission to care for these people who were unwanted by their families and driven out of their homes into the streets. He looks for them everywhere and brings them to his sanctuary and gives them, love and care and feed them and wash them, provide medication etc. He keeps on adding more and more guests every month. Now they have 78 guests and about 18 staff members to take care of them.
This is Raju’s full time service to the needy. Initially Raju used his personal money mostly and some donations. Later 18 members of the Trivandrum Knanaya church came forward and joined him in this great endeavor and formed a charitable society to run the centre as a model project of the Knanaya Community. Most of the members are non Christians and 80% of the donations come from non-Christians. Raju is a very low profile and modest person who never seeks any publicity or fame for the great humanitarian work he has been doing.
He does it all for the love of God. Also SICK is trying hard in identifying their families and resettle them through counseling. Some 150 people have already been reunited with their loved ones, relatives, parents or children. An Autonomous Charitable Organization of the like-minded members of St. Ignatius Knanaya Syrian Church, Trivandrum.
